Welcome to Ke-yaki Pottery by James Coenenケーヤキ 工房へようこそ − ジェームス ケーネンKe-yaki Pottery is located in Sayama, Saitama, Japan. Sayama is not far to the northwest of Tokyo. Functional stoneware pottery is the main ware produced at Ke-yaki Pottery. The small and medium sized pottery pieces are thrown on a side-treadle kick wheel or hand built. The bigger size pots are thrown using a Shimpo VL-Whisper electric wheel. Jerry Horning was my teacher when I studied pottery at Creighton University. I was told Jerry was the first student of Warren Mackenzie who studied with Bernard Leach at his pottery in England. I wouid suppose that many things I do when I make pots have come down from Leach through Mackenzie and Horning. I learned to throw on the side-treadle design potters wheel that was used in the Leach pottery and still prefer to use that wheel more than an electric. After I graduated from Creighton, Jerry Horning and I remained friends until his untimely death in 2002. Jerry was leading a firing of the Tozan Noborigama at the Univeristy of Northern Arizona and invited me to join in that firing. That firing was my first experience with wood firing and started an interest in the technique which continues. Later, I helped Jerry build a wood-fire kiln at his home and was present for the first and other firings of that kiln. Jerry was my one and only teacher. I will always be grateful for what he showed me about pottery and our many years of friendship. There are teaching videos featuring Jerry Horning that would benefit anyone who watched them.
